How Many Days Do You Need for
Safari & Kilimanjaro?

By the Africa Endless Cruising Team Updated 2025 8 min read Moshi, Kilimanjaro

Tanzania offers two of Africa's greatest adventures in one country - a classic wildlife safari and a Kilimanjaro summit - and most travellers want to experience both. The most common question we hear in Moshi is simple: how many days do I actually need? Here's an honest answer from guides who do this every week.

The Short Answer: 14-21 Days

To do both a proper safari and a Kilimanjaro climb without feeling rushed, plan for 14 to 21 days in Tanzania. Here's how that breaks down:

Good
14-17 Days

Comfortably achievable. A 7-day Machame route, 3-day Serengeti safari, and 2-3 days on Zanzibar. Most of our guests opt for this.

Minimum
10-13 Days

Possible but tight. Requires a shorter 6-day climb route, a 2-day safari, and skipping Zanzibar. We recommend only for experienced adventurers.

Kilimanjaro Alone: 6-9 Days

The mountain takes as long as it takes. Rushing acclimatisation is the number one reason climbers fail to summit - and a failed attempt still costs the same as a successful one. Here are the routes and what they demand:

Route Duration Success Rate Verdict
Lemosho 7-8 Days 90%+ Recommended
Machame 6-7 Days 85% Very Good
Rongai 6-7 Days 82% Good
Marangu 5-6 Days 65% Tight

Add a pre-climb day in Moshi for kit-check, briefing, and rest, and a post-climb recovery day before you continue. So realistically, budget 8-10 days from arrival in Moshi to departure for your next destination.

Local Guide Tip

Never go straight from the summit to a long safari drive. Your body needs at least one full rest day after descending. We strongly recommend spending that night in Moshi - a hot shower, a real bed, and a proper meal do more for your wellbeing than any supplement.

Safari Alone: 3-7 Days

Tanzania's Northern Circuit - Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire - is one of the richest wildlife ecosystems on earth. How long you spend depends on what you want to see and how deeply you want to experience it.

3-4 Days: The Classic Northern Circuit

This is the most popular option for climbers adding a safari. You'll cover the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater - the two unmissable parks - with full-day game drives in each. You'll see the Big Five, witness vast landscapes, and return with extraordinary photographs. It's a genuine experience, not a rushed tick-box exercise.

5-7 Days: The Full Northern Circuit

Add Tarangire for its enormous elephant herds and baobab-studded landscape, and Lake Manyara for tree-climbing lions and flamingos. A longer safari rewards patience - you'll have time to linger at a waterhole, follow a pride of lions across the plains, or watch the Serengeti at dawn without rushing to the next park gate.

People always say three days isn't enough for the Serengeti. But three days done right - proper timing, a knowledgeable guide, no rushing - changes lives. It's not about the days, it's about the attention.

Two Itineraries That Actually Work

The 16-Day Classic: Climb First, Safari After

We recommend doing Kilimanjaro before the safari. You'll be in peak physical condition for the climb, and the safari becomes a deeply satisfying, restful reward - not an obligation before a hard mountain.

1
Day 1
Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport Moshi

Transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Kit check with your guides. Briefing on the climb. Rest and acclimatise to the East African altitude (900m).

2-8
Days 2-8
Kilimanjaro Climb - Lemosho Route

Seven days on the mountain: rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Summit night on Day 7, descend the same day.

9
Day 9
Recovery Day Moshi

Hot shower, celebration dinner, a full rest day. Gear sorting and laundry. Optional visit to a local coffee farm or the Moshi market.

10-12
Days 10-12
Safari - Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater

Drive west into the Serengeti for two days of game drives, then a full day descending into Ngorongoro Crater - the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and home to 30,000 animals.

13-15
Days 13-15
Zanzibar - Beach Recovery

Fly from Arusha to Zanzibar. Three days of complete rest on turquoise waters. Stone Town exploration, spice tour, or simply sleep. You've earned it.

16
Day 16
Depart Zanzibar

Transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your international connection.

Safari First or Climb First?

Climb First - Our Recommendation

Doing Kilimanjaro before the safari is almost always the better choice. You arrive in Tanzania fresh, physically at your peak, and can commit fully to the mountain. The safari then becomes a wonderful wind-down - you're in vehicles, not climbing, and the experience is largely about observation and rest. Many clients tell us the safari feels even more magical after the physical achievement of the summit.

Safari First - When It Makes Sense

There are valid reasons to reverse the order. If you're visiting during the Great Migration peak (July-September) and have fixed dates for witnessing the river crossings, booking the safari first around those dates may be necessary. Some travellers also prefer to ease into Tanzania's pace before taking on the mountain. If you go safari first, build in a full rest day in Moshi before your climb begins.

Don't Underestimate Travel Days

Kilimanjaro International Airport to the Serengeti requires driving through Arusha (2-3 hours) and then another 4-5 hours to the park. Include transfer days in your itinerary - they are not half-days. We handle all logistics but cannot compress geography.

Our Moshi-based team will build a custom itinerary around your exact dates, fitness level, and travel style - combining Kilimanjaro and safari seamlessly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do Kilimanjaro and a safari in 10 days?

Technically yes, but it requires a shorter 6-day climb route (lower success rate), a very brief 2-day safari, and no Zanzibar leg. It's doable for experienced, fit travellers, but we'd encourage you to add at least 4 more days if at all possible. The experience improves dramatically with a few extra days of breathing room.

Is Zanzibar necessary?

Not necessary, but highly recommended - especially after Kilimanjaro. Your body will have been through significant physical stress, and three days of salt water, rest, and good food makes a real difference to how you feel on the long-haul flight home. Many guests say Zanzibar was their favourite part of the trip.

What about adding Zanzibar to a pure safari trip?

Absolutely. A 5-day Northern Circuit safari followed by 4 days in Zanzibar is one of our most popular packages - no climbing required. You fly between the two destinations (about 1.5 hours) and experience two completely different sides of East Africa in under two weeks.

How long before flying home should I summit Kilimanjaro?

We recommend at least 2-3 full days between your summit night and any long-haul international flight. Altitude affects the body in subtle ways for several days after descent, and the fatigue is real. Flying too soon can result in extreme discomfort. Build in the buffer - you won't regret it.
